Visual and digital art, a challenge for content, launched by Samsung with the Niio community

Talent scouting. A giant canvas display with micro-LEDs to be animated with creativity and originality

To discover up-and-coming talents in world digital art, and provide the opportunity for established artists to create original works that will stimulate the kind of creativity that relies on the use of technology, the most innovative platforms and new media: this is the aim of the international competition recently announced by Samsung, a competition that puts 15 thousand dollars on the table, and will culminate in an exhibition-event scheduled for May. It will later tour as a series of exhibition in ten exclusive locations around the world, starting in South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The artists are asked to try their hand at using “The Wall”, a maxi “canvas-display” of 4K micro-Leds, with extremely high-definition. The works will be judged by a jury of visual arts experts who will consider the artistic and conceptual excellence, evaluate the creativity, originality, and the more technical aspects involved in the digital medium. The Korean tech company decided to launch the competition in collaboration with new media art platform Niio, a real global community of artists, galleries and institutions working in the field of digital art.

Samsung is always exploring new ways to make premium content as impactful as possible and to take the user experience to the next level

“Samsung is always exploring new ways to make premium content as impactful as possible and to take the user experience to the next level”, underscores Hyesung Ha, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This competition, which one can register for on the website www.niio.com/get/the-wall-open-call, celebrates the latest and greatest talent in digital art and provides the art community a meaningful platform on which its artistic creations can be showcased. The competition will also play a major role in heralding the next generation of display experiences – all brought to life on the awe-inspiring The Wall.”

The Niio platform boasts over 4000 artists and partners from over 70 countries, who can post their multimedia works online, both for commercial purposes and to make them available for exhibitions and events, or simply for viewing on new multimedia devices with very high resolution and visual quality. Many of the maxi-displays already on the market – like the latest-generation ultra-slim high-definition televisions – are increasingly being used in homes, as well as offices and other locations, as “canvases” on which to project images.

This is a new way of “decorating” walls taking the interior decoration, and especially the “mood” into consideration: the latest-generation displays, like those of personal computers, can be configured to show a carousel of animated backgrounds when the TV mode is not on. The purpose of the Samsung competition is to push the creation of artistic content and make it available to users. The Wall is the feather in the cap of Samsung’s MicroLED modular technology: the screens were designed to be customized in terms of size and proportion, to adapt to any space and to all interior decoration and design needs.
