From the silent dawn at the Royal Palace of Caserta to Rome’s archaeological nights, a journey to discover how our perception of beauty changes when daylight fades
There is a subtle magic that comes alive when the gates of Italy’s great monuments open outside their usual visiting hours. When daylight gives way to the pink hues of dawn or the soft glow of the moon, architecture and history seem to breathe at a different rhythm: intimate, almost secret.
Many summer initiatives — and not only summer ones — invite visitors to rediscover cultural heritage under a new light, tracing a fascinating itinerary: from the early morning hours at the Royal Palace of Caserta to the illuminated underground spaces of Rome, all the way to the castles of Emilia and historic gardens.
The awakening of wonders at the Royal Palace of Caserta
For those who love to contemplate beauty in the absolute silence of early morning, the most anticipated event at the Vanvitellian complex doubles its openings. The initiative “Alba alla Reggia” welcomes visitors at first light on 1 and 29 August, opening the gates of the Royal Park and the English Garden from 4.30am.
In this idyllic setting, the awakening of nature is accompanied by storytelling moments and musical performances of the highest level. On 1 August, the event takes place at the Graefer Greenhouses, inside the English Garden, where the Orchestra Filarmonica Campana will perform under the baton of French conductor Jean-François Verdier, with pianist Stefania Argentieri as soloist.
The musical programme will range from the evocative Siegfried’s Rhine Journey by Wagner to the ethereal notes of Debussy’s Clair de lune, through Poulenc’s piano concerto, before culminating in Grieg’s celebrated Morning Mood. On 29 August, the experience returns with performances by Progetto Sonora and Arabesque Dance Company. Visits to the Royal Apartments will then begin from 8.30am.
Rome between archaeology and the stars: Caracalla and Ostia Antica
The majestic ruins of the Baths of Caracalla reveal themselves in an unexpected guise thanks to “Notturno imperiale”. Promoted by the Special Superintendency of Rome, the initiative offers an evening walk through one of the most imposing monumental complexes of antiquity, where the colossal illuminated architecture enters into dialogue with the reflections of the water mirror.
The visitor route unfolds not only above ground, but also descends into the atmospheric underground spaces and the great Mithraeum, which director Rocco Bochicchio describes as the invisible engine of the entire thermal complex. As superintendent Daniela Porro has pointed out, these openings allow visitors to observe the site from a different perspective, where monumentality combines with the suggestive quality of evening light, inviting a slower and more conscious experience.
A total of six evenings are scheduled between July and October. Particularly noteworthy is the event on 26 September, coinciding with the European Heritage Days, which will offer a special ticket price of just €1.
Il Parco archeologico di Ostia Antica is also expanding its programme with a rich calendar of weekend openings. Until 26 September, the Castle of Julius II will extend its opening hours until 11pm, hosting an exhibition of Christian art and the second edition of the Giulio in jazz festival.
At the same time, the Museum of the Ships in Fiumicino will offer evening visits enriched by the historical re-enactments of Ostiensia, telling the story of trade in the Roman world. Extraordinary free evening openings are also planned for the Ostiense Museum and the complex of Sant’Ippolito on the Isola Sacra.
The ancient mysteries of the Castle of Scipione
Moving to the hills of Parma, the thirteenth-century Castello di Scipione dei Marchesi Pallavicino plays with the fascination of mystery and the celestial vault. During summer weekends in July and August, the castle organises special night visits, leading the public to discover areas usually inaccessible, such as the ancient fifteenth-century prisons, secret passages and the enigmatic Devil’s Sitting Room.
These stories and ghostly legends inspired Carlo Lucarelli’s famous noir podcast Giallo in Castello, which echoes through the manor’s walls during the guided route.
For those who prefer the poetry of the starry sky to tales of spectres, the castle also organises a magical night of the stars to coincide with the passage of the Perseids. This special evening offers the chance to enjoy a sunset picnic on the lawn, take part in a guided night tour and finally settle into the historic garden, exceptionally open until midnight, to watch the shooting stars far from the lights of the city.
Summer stories across FAI heritage sites
This journey through nocturnal beauty finds a perfect synthesis in the rich calendar of sere FAI d’Estate. Until mid-September, the foundation opens the doors of 30 of its most spectacular heritage sites across 15 Italian regions, offering a programme that brings together candlelit guided tours, open-air concerts, literary meetings and astronomical observations in historic gardens.
In Milan, the elegant garden of Villa Necchi Campiglio becomes an ideal setting for evening aperitifs and events dedicated to wine culture, while Villa and Collezione Panza in Varese welcomes visitors every Tuesday evening with floral workshops and contemporary art routes under the stars.
Not far away, the thousand-year-old Monastery of Torba in Gornate Olona invites visitors to celebrate midsummer and the night of San Lorenzo with atmospheric outdoor dinners in the shadow of its imposing medieval tower, offering an experience in which Italy’s great history blends with the carefree spirit of the summer season.
